    Forum Description

OntarioDestination:  Bayfield, Ontario Dates: July 25–July 29 (4 nights) For more information on this trip please contact Literary Traveler. 1-855-LIT-TRVL Readings: Alice Munro's Best: A Selection of Stories Accommodations:  The Little Inn, Bayfield, a historic inn on the shores of Lake Huron and in the heritage village of Bayfield Description/Itinerary: Alice Munro now takes her place as the first Canadian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and only the 12th woman in the Nobel’s 100-year history. That a prize of such magnitude should to go to a self-taught author who writes so often of ordinary people and small-town life is remarkable, or is until you actually read her work. We will examine Munro’s incomparable empathy for her characters, the depth of her understanding of human nature, and the grace and surprise of her narrative. Many of Munro’s stories are set in pastoral Huron County, Ontario, and have a strong regional focus. We will stay at The Little Inn in the historic village of Bayfield in the heart of Huron County. Situated on a perfect natural harbour of Lake Huron, Bayfield manages to be both sophisticated and casual. We will meet with Mary Wolfe, owner of the Village Bookshop in Bayfield, who will inform our discussions with firsthand accounts about the woman behind her stories. We will take part in the Blyth Festival, a first-class theatre festival in a hamlet of 350 persons. We will visit the community of Wingham where Munro grew up and perhaps be lucky enough to meet again with some of her schoolmates. Click here for the itinerary and terms and conditions. Leaders: Mary Bird has been listening to stories all her life. She was entranced by the Irish stories her aunt told her at bedtime. She has studied storytellers ever since. Mary has attended many Classical Pursuits and led two. She has found that the shared inquiry approach to discussion yields very satisfying results. Fees: C$1495 to C$1895 per person based on room choice Single supplement: Varies; see itinerary Taxes and gratuities (per person): Varies by room choice; see itinerary Fee includes readings, accommodation, two meals a day, discussions, ground transportation, walking tours, talks, excursions, and admissions.
